What is Godly Play

Godly Play in the beginning

Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to the art of Christian spiritual direction and faith formation, serving children between 3 and 12 years old as well as youths and adults at churches, schools, hospitals, elderly homes, prisons, half-way houses, community centres, counseling rooms and missions around the world. Its core values, especially the emphasis on and attention to the spiritual qualities of teaching, relationships, physical space and use of time, continues to influence and challenge established traditions. Godly Play has its origins in Maria Montessori's religious education principles, and was developed by the late US theologian and educationalist Rev. Dr. Jerome W. Berryman and his wife, Thea, over 60 years of well-proven research at the Centre for the Theology of Childhood. In 2015, Godly Play Hong Kong was born as a registered charity and is now part of an international network of associations and other organisations linked to the Godly Play Foundation.
